Mercury-Free Fillings: What You Need to Know
At Noble Family Dental, we use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings only. Here's why we made that choice and what it means for your treatment.
For decades, silver amalgam fillings were the standard treatment for cavities. They're durable and cost-effective — but they contain mercury, and they're visible when you open your mouth. At Noble Family Dental, we've chosen to use composite resin fillings exclusively.
What is composite resin?
Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles. It bonds directly to the tooth structure, which means less healthy tooth needs to be removed compared to amalgam. Once set and polished, it's virtually invisible.
Is composite as durable as amalgam?
Modern composite resins have improved significantly. For small to medium-sized cavities, composite performs comparably to amalgam. For very large fillings in high-pressure areas (like back molars), your dentist may discuss whether a crown or inlay is a better long-term option.
What about existing amalgam fillings?
If you have old amalgam fillings that are intact and not causing problems, we generally recommend leaving them in place. Removing them unnecessarily releases mercury vapour and removes healthy tooth structure. We only replace amalgam fillings when they're worn, cracked, or leaking.
