How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?
Most people know they should see a dentist regularly — but how often is actually necessary? The answer depends on your individual risk factors.
The general recommendation is a check-up and cleaning every six months. This schedule works well for most people — it gives your dentist a chance to catch small problems (a cavity starting to form, early gum inflammation) before they become bigger, more expensive ones.
When six months isn't enough
Some patients benefit from more frequent visits — every three to four months. This includes people with active gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, diabetes (which affects gum health), or those who smoke. If you fall into one of these groups, your dentist will advise a more frequent schedule.
Can you go less often?
If you have excellent oral hygiene, no history of dental problems, and a low-sugar diet, some dentists may suggest annual visits are sufficient. That said, even patients with healthy teeth benefit from professional cleaning — tartar builds up in areas a toothbrush can't reach.
The best person to answer this question is your dentist. At Noble Family Dental, we assess each patient individually and recommend a schedule that fits your specific situation — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
